One of the most often neglected aspects of online marketing is SEO. Unlike PPC, email marketing and other more immediate methods of online marketing/advertising SEO takes time! When working on the SEO of a site, it’s typical for business owners not to see results for a few months! For that reason, along with the fact many business owners do not know how to do SEO, it goes overlooked.

In this post, I will share with you a few on and off page techniques you should be using to optimize your website’s pages:

1. Meta Title Tag – The title tag is quite possibly is the most important element on a page and should contain the keywords the page is focusing on. When you do a Google search and look at the organic rankings, the title tag is the Blue clickable text you see above the search results domain URL.  The title tag of a web page is meant to be an accurate and concise description of a page’s content. A good rule is to keep this field at around 55 characters.

2. Meta Description Tag – Using the above example the description tag is the content found below the search results domain URL. It is meant to be a more thorough description of a page’s content. The meta description should  also contain keywords, but also be written in a way that compels the user to click. A good rule of thumb is keep this field to about 150 – 160 characters.

3. Keyword Prominence – Keyword prominence pertains to how close to the beginning your keyword appears. (The closer the better). The general recommendation is to place important keywords at, or near, the start of a web page, sentence, title or meta tag.

4. Heading Tags – Heading tags are a special type of tag that search engines pay special attention to. An example of a heading tag can be seen here: http://silkweb2016.silksoftware.net/services/migration/ “Magneto Migration Services” is this page’s heading tag. Heading tags appear in the copy of of a page’s content and are used to denote different topics within a page similar to paragraph breaks. Having heading tags in your web page not only helps visitors find and skim information, it also helps with SEO!

These are just a few simple SEO techniques that will help your page. Always remember, content is king! Adding user rich content on a consistent basis should always be the focus when promoting your website!
